- The hologram is expected to revolutionise the world of entertainment and communication between people
- Thanks to the low latency of Vodafone’s commercial 5G network, holographic image communication can transmit data-heavy 3D video

Mobile World Capital Barcelona, with the collaboration of Vodafone and Newtonlab Space, has presented the 5G Hologram, a project that showcases the potential of holographic technology combined with 5G technology. Portl, the holographic device presented within the framework of the MWC Barcelona 2021, is expected to revolutionise the world of entertainment and communication between people.
Thanks to the low latency or delay and the high speed of Vodafone’s commercial 5G network, holographic image communication can transmit data-heavy 3D video signals, meaning a more real world for the users and providing a qualitative leap forward in interactivity.
The 5G is key to taking holographic communication to the next level. With the flow of large amounts of data in real time, immersive technologies are ready for widespread commercial use. Immersive technology and telepresence will affect the way content producers, brands and a wide variety of industries go to market.
According to Eduard Martín, CIO and director of 5G for Mobile World Capital Barcelona: “This technology is advancing very rapidly, and we are confident that this is the way forward. We do not know whether it will be 5 years from now, but what we do know is that holographic technology is here to stay and is going to revolutionise not just the entertainment industry, but also communications in general”.

Using Portl, the holographic device distributed by the catalan company Newton Lab, 3D content can be projected and even a life-sized person, which will allow high level telepresence in real time by means of 5G technology.
Portl, created by the american company Portl, has a camera and two speakers that, in conjunction with 5G technology, allow real-time interaction between the physical audience in front of the device and the person projected as a hologram who is in the capture studio, which could be anywhere in the world. The resolution and quality of the hologram image is maximum, as is the immediacy of the return, which is essential for interaction in real time.
Newtonlab Space investigates and develops different holography techniques that through Portl can be applied to various sectors such as healthcare, corporate, retail or advertising, events, among others.
The hologram at the MWC Barcelona 2021
From today till Thursday, the last day of the congress, Mobile World Capital Barcelona will have this hologram at its stand (3F10), where attendees can try it out and create their own hologram and see it projected live inside the Portl device.
