- The new Laboratory will have a multitechnology network and infrastructure open to corporations, SMEs and startups
- The objective of the Lab is to facilitate access to market for products and services in preproduction, as well as to promote research based on 5G technologies
- The new space will be incorporated into the node network of 5GBarcelona, an initiative that will turn Barcelona into an open and neutral 5G hub
Barcelona, 12th March 2018.- Telefónica and 5GBarcelona will launch a new open Laboratory to test and implement 5G and IoT technologies. The lab will incorporate into the node network of 5GBarcelona and will be available for corporations, SMEs and startups to test and validate new services and applications. The project was presented last Wednesday by Kim Faura, general manager of Telefónica in Catalonia, and, representing 5GBarcelona, Carlos Grau, general manager of Mobile World Capital Barcelona (MWCapital).
The new Lab will be located at Pier01, home of MWCapital Barcelona, and will focus on e2e IoT tests with LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area) networks and multitechnology infrastructure (NB-IoT, LTE-M and CAT1). The technologies tested on site offer advanced capacities that are especially relevant for the industry and that will provide significant improvements in the fields of IoT, battery consumption and indoor coverage.
Thanks to this new space, any company or entrepreneur will be able to test their projects and even try them in real network environments in Barcelona as 5G technologies come closer to implementation.
The partners of 5GBarcelona and Telefónica expect the 5G and IoT Lab to be a model of acceleration and business creation, a facilitator to take products and services to market and a promoter for 5G pilot research.
Acceleration, tech support and know-how
As a member of 5GBarcelona, MWCapital will be in charge of the space and will incorporate an on-site manager, while the i2CAT Foundation, another of the 5GBarcelona founding members, will promote development within the local ecosystem and offer on-site tech support for users. Telefónica will take care of telecoms infrastructure, remote tech support and training, as well as offering its global knowledge, use cases and technology models applied to business to users.
The Lab will integrate all the relevant actors in the network, chipset and platform fields. As an added value, the solutions tested at the Lab will be able to include certifications and incorporate into the different projects of the group.
The Lab, which will be a co-working and acceleration center, as well as offer tech support and know-how, also expects to attract talent, be a motor for development and promote the entrepreneur ICT ecosystem of Barcelona.
The basis for this new space is Telefónica’s The Think, a series of collaborative labs that cover all the development process for IoT solutions, from prototyping to real-environment testing. Telefónica will make a replica of technologies in launch-phase available to users, as well as the necessary support to connect and integrate those technologies in new IoT solutions.
