The Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the i2CAT Foundation, the CTTC, Atos and the UPC launched the 5GBarcelona initiative to transform Catalonia into a 5G European digital hub
On January 9th, 2018, the official launch of the pioneering project 5G Barcelona took place. 5GBarcelona will create an experimental open environment to transform the city into a 5G metropolitan laboratory. The presentation, which was attended by more than 100 people and included the official signature by the founding members, generated great expectation among the media.
i2CAT’s Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, Sergi Figuerola, stated that 5GBarcelona is a “pioneering initiative in Catalonia that aims to add efforts and knowledge, and leverage them”. Carlos Grau, Director of Mobile World Capital Barcelona; Jordi Puigneró, Secretary of Telecommunications, Cybersecurity and Digital Society of the Government of Catalonia, and the first deputy mayor of Barcelona City Council, Gerardo Pisarello, agreed that the metropolitan area of Barcelona has an ideal ecosystem of research and development and innovation for the creation of a European open laboratory for 5G.
5GBarcelona will be an open experimental infrastructure in the metropolitan area that will act as an urban, citizen and technological laboratory for the validation of 5G technologies and services. This will be an open innovation environment based on collaboration between different actors, both public and private, and a stimulus for the existing innovative ecosystem in Barcelona, which will help attract foreign investment, promote technological start-ups and develop an industry around 5G.
In coming months, the founding members of the project will start implementing the action plan that will allow the deployment of the experimental infrastructure, identify those verticals to which offer support and provide service, incorporate other entities and companies, and involve a citizen base in this open and strategic initiative in Barcelona and Catalonia to create the first Living Lab 5G in Europe and the world.
